Today is a very special day in the world.

It may be my very favorite day of the year.

Would you like to know why?

I'm going to tell you anyway.

Today is Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

And that is very special indeed.

Now, for those of you that don't know what Beaujolais Nouveau is...it's wine. It's a very trendy sort of wine and if you're a wine snob you may be saying to yourself (or to everyone within earshot) Boo on Beaujolais! To you, Mr. Wine Snob, I say Boo on You because I happen to love Beaujolais Nouveau.whether it's orginal to like it or not. [insert razzberry here]

But why does it have its very own special day, you ask?

Marketing mostly I suspect. There are all sorts of French laws and customs centered around this particular varietal. It must come from the Beaujolais region of France and the grapes must be gamay grapes and they must be harvested by hand. And also, nobody's allowed to release it for sale until the third Thursday in November...I dunno why but it's the law in France. There are also some special ways to ferment it and it's meant to be drunk before spring and not saved.

So people all over the world wait anxiously for the release of the wine and there are parties to celebrate the harvest and the new wine season and this particular wine itself.

And can I just say it is mighty tasty? Well...OK that's subjective and also it varies from year to year because you never know how the crops are going to produce each year. But this year is supposed to be the best they've seen in 50 years.

Unfortunately, I don't want to get drunk on a Thursday when I have to work the next day. So I'm saving my Beaujolais Nouveau celebration for tomorrow. Owen, Lex, and I will be cracking open a bottle or three over a hearty supper and quite possibly Repo: The Genetic Opera tomorrow night. But I am nearly dying over here waiting and almost said to heck with the hangover, I'm thirsty right now!

But I'm a good girl and shall wait until the morrow.

If it's spectacular? Owen and I are going to buy a case to split. And I am not sharing. Unless I like you a lot and even then you'll have to have something extra specially good to to bargain with.


PS I wanted very much to post UB40's Red Red Wine...except I don't have a copy of it even though I have a copy of practically every other 80's song ever written. And then I realized why I don't have it...I freaking hate that song.
