Who are you? she asked.
The question caught me by surprise.
The only answer that came immediately to mind was Why, I'm you.
But that's not precisely right.
I am you, yes. But there's ever so much more.
I am he who lies sleeping with a tiny satisfied smile on his face. I am she of whom you dream. I am they who got under your skin. I am mother, father, sister, brother...child.
I am those we work with, play with, drink copious amounts with. I am those we love and those we love...to hate.
I am no one and everyone - large and small.
I am crone and I am the fool.
I am nothing and everything.
I am darkness and I am light.
I am kittens and I am snake.
I am a mosaic of people, places, choices.
No more.
No less.
But then you already know this...
Because I am you.
Do I contradict myself?
Very well, I contradict myself.
I am large -
I contain multitudes.
-Walt Whitman from Song of Myself
