This is the Part Where I Go "Uhm, Universe? What Are You Trying to Say?"

OK yeah so...you know how a couple of weeks ago I mentioned my secret keeper?

And then just a couple of days ago how I blogged about being a secret keeper myself?

So late last night I was catching up on my blog roll and discovered Catherinette had just blogged about secret keeping too!

Hers brought up an interesting question that had been on my mind ever since I'd blogged about my own secret keeper...

What is the statute of limitations on keeping a person's secret who is no longer a friend?

The comments have been quite interesting to say the least.

In my mind, there is no statute of limitations. Regardless of the reason behind the ending of the friendship, secrets are shared with the unspoken understanding that the secret will not be shared...ever. EVER.

I consider it karmic debt to share a secret. And if a secret is shared out of malicious intent, that debt increases threefold.

Besides, just to point out the obvious, if someone has shared a secret with you, chances are quite likely you've shared a secret with her1. How long would you like your secret to be kept?

OK, Universe. I'm listening then. What's the story with the secret keeping?

1: I've no bias against women when it comes to secrets. I chose the pronoun because it's been my experience women share more of their inner most thoughts with other women and it's women who are prone to gossip. I don't know many men who gossip. Do you?
